How do I decide what weight, color and gloss of thread to use in free motion quilting?

The choice of thread is very subjective and largely dependent upon the type of quilt you are making, it's intended purpose (that is wall-hanging vs a baby quilt that will be frequently washed), and the design effects you want to make.

When I first started quilting, I tended to use low gloss, finer threads, that would blend in with the fabric so that my beginner stitching quality would not be as obvious.  As I have gradually improved, I started venturing into heavier multicolor  or glossy threads that go well with the design effect I am trying to create.

Since I do a variety of quilts styles (mostly wallhangings), I try to select threads that complement the design.  If there is a very dominant focal point or pattern, I don't want the background stitching to detract from the flow of the eye.  Thus I will choose a less obvious thread.  However, if the stitching is to be the focus, then I will use a heavier, and perhaps high gloss thread to show off the stitching pattern.  In fact, I will likely combine different threads for this type of quilting.

And finally, for thread painting, I use again, whatever thread is going to give me the artistic effect I am looking to create.

I keep a stack of muslin- batting sandwiches (made from scraps of batting from other projects) near my machine so that I can practice my stitching, but also so that I can audition different threads for my projects.
