Wow! that's a tough one.  I recently used an 80/20 thinking it would be nice and flat.  Au Contraire!  It was much too thick.  I'm going to redo the piece with an iron-on fleece batting.  I've used it in a sample piece and liked it.  It was soft and thin and had the added plus of stability since it is not stretchy like batting.

If you're going to use the tablecloth eg. putting things on it like a lamp or a pitcher, you won't want a thick trapunto or the items won't sit securely.

On the other hand if you are just placing a lamp in the center you could add some wool batting which will give you a nice faux trapunto affect encircling it.  It will still flatten where you need it.

My tablecloth is made from Christmas fabrics and will be used on the dining room table.  I will not want it too poofy or my water glasses will tip over.  I also want it to drape a little on the edges.  I have heard of quilters using flannel as a batting.  I may consider that.  The iron-on fleece batting offered in our store is too thick, but I have seen other quilters using a thinner version.
